PLANT EXTRACTS

The valuable Greek herbs

We choose among the great variety of Greek and Mediterranean herbs, but we may expand our range to serve our goals. Greece is being considered a hot spot of biodiversity thanks to its unique geo-climatic conditions. Greek flora harvests a variety of medicinal plants with well-known properties since antiquity. This insight has inspired us to incorporate them into our products’ formulations.

Pink rock-rose

Pink rock-rose (Cistus creticus) is a shrubby plant species with a long history of traditional use. Cistus creticus extracts contain high amounts of polyphenols with strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, tonic, and potential antiviral and antibacterial properties.

Small-leaved linden

Small-leaved linden or small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata) is a deciduous tree. Its flowers (along with the sepals) collected in mid-summer are used for tea preparations against tension and stress. The characteristic green spherical fruits appear in autumn, considered even more active as they contain flavonoids, tannins, and phenolic acids, which contribute to its calming effect.

Bitter orange

Bitter orange (Citrus aurantium) originates from South Asia, but it thrives in the Mediterranean region, cultivated mainly as an ornamental plant and a rootstock for grafting. Even though its fruits are not edible, their skin is rich in essential oils. Its leaves and flowers have been reported for their antispasmodic and digestive properties. They are used for stress, insomnia, stomach aches, and cough. They’re also used to whet the appetite and fight constipation and for dyslipidemia and diabetes.

Purslane

Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) has been a well-known therapeutic species for more than 2000 years. It is rich in antioxidants, contributing to the prevention of cardiovascular disease, improving brain function, and stimulating the immune system. About 30 different biological actions and more than 60 indications have been reported, characterizing it as a “medicinal food.”

Olive tree

Olive tree (Olea europaea) was known in ancient Greece and is mentioned in Greek mythology. People recognized olive oil’s value and its properties long ago. Olive oil and olives are essential components of the Mediterranean diet. Moreover, the extract of the olive leaves is also beneficial. Recent studies document its potent anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-viral, and antioxidant properties, making it a natural immune booster.

The Greek sage

The Greek sage (Salvia fruticosa Mill. or Salvia triloba L.) exhibits remarkable medicinal properties known by Hippocrates, who used it for respiratory diseases and various gynaecological problems. Furthermore, Dioscorides considered it as a diuretic, hemostatic, and emmenagogue herb. Recent scientific data support its use as a tonic, memory enhancer, and antiseptic against mouth and gums’ infections. Furthermore, it has a significant effect as an estrogen modulator, making it an excellent aid for menopausal women.
